BUXOM Eyeshadows
BUXOM Room Service Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent mint.” It’s a brightened, light-medium aqua green with a warm, golden sheen that gives it a more metallic finish overall. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that ran a smidgen dry in the pan but didn’t appear that way on the lid. The color started to fade after eight hours of wear on me. Chanel Promesse #4 (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). Lancome Fashion Forward (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Dior Dulcinee #2 (LE) is warmer (90% similar). MAC Zestful (LE, $20.00) is more shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Dior Blue Lagoon (374) Eyeshadow #5 (LE) is more muted (90% similar). theBalm #36 (P, $6.50) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Make Up For Ever #53 (LE, $23.00) is darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM No Faux Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as an “iridescent snakeskin.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark reddish brown with green-teal shimmer, so it has a multi-faceted appearance and flashes cooler, greener and then warmer and redder. I felt like the duochrome effect was particularly noticeable with this one, even on the lid, without having to contort yourself into weird positions. The texture was really dense and “thick,” even though it is a powder, and it applied well on the skin with smooth, even color that was easily blended out. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading on me. Urban Decay Lounge (P, $18.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC I've Got a Crush on You (LE, $32.50) is more shimmery, cooler (95% similar). Ardency Inn Peacock (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). NARS Malacca (P, $24.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). Kat Von D On the Road (P, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Castor Gray (LE) is darker, more muted (90% similar). Too Faced Girly (LE, $16.00) is warmer (90% similar). MAC When in Rio (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Cool Caviar Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering gunmetal.” It’s a dark, charcoal gray with a subtle, cool undertone and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, fairly blendable and easy to use texture–but it was just a smidgen dry–that lasted for eight hours on me. Laura Mercier Gunmetal (LE, $23.00) is darker (95% similar). MAC Bao Bao's Jewels #5 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). Make Up For Ever ME108 Steel (P, $21.00) is warmer (95% similar). BUXOM Diamond Darling Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “shimmering frost.” It’s a brightened, light beige with subtle, warm undertones and a metallic sheen. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a dense, buttery consistency that adhered really well to bare skin. The color blended out without issue, and it wore for eight hours before it started to fade. LORAC Dream Girl #9 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). LORAC Vanilla (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). MAC Smoky Black Friday #1 (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). BUXOM Spoiled Sexy Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte deep mauve.” It’s a muted, medium-dark mauve with warm, brown undertones and a matte finish. It had sheer color coverage, which was likely the result of it being incredibly powdery and prone to sheering out–so little of it stuck to bare skin. This is a shade that absolutely needs some sort of primer to help it adhere to the lid. What little of it I could see on the skin seemed to stay on all right for seven hours. LORAC Pink Mauve (P) is warmer (95% similar). LORAC Pink Mauve (P) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Haux (P, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Hourglass Monochrome #4 (P) is cooler (95% similar). MAC Quarry (P, $16.00) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Anastasia Dusty Rose (LE, $12.00) is warmer (90% similar). Tarte Eco-chic (LE) is lighter, cooler (90% similar). Make Up For Ever M546 Dark Purple Taupe (P, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tarte Misty Mauve (LE) is darker, cooler (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM IT Crowd Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “glimmering cayenne.” It’s a bold, medium-dark orange with warm undertones and a dusting of gold shimmer over a matte finish. It had rich color payoff with a soft, blendable consistency that didn’t sheer out too readily, but I noticed it was thinner and didn’t play as well with some of the denser frosts from the range. The color lasted for eight hours on me. Sugarpill Flamepoint (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, lighter, brighter (95% similar). Inglot #123R Bottom (P, $6.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Party Girl Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “fuchsia luster.” It’s a medium-dark, fuchsia pink with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had decent pigmentation, but I found it really hard to blend out on the lid, and it had a tendency to stick where it applied and not wanting to diffuse. It lasted for eight hours before I saw fading, but I would use this one over a primer. Urban Decay Noise (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (95% similar). Urban Decay Backlash (LE, $18.00) is lighter (95% similar). Too Faced Totally Fetch (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery, darker, more pigmented (95% similar). BUXOM VIP Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “sparkling orchid.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark purple with warm, pink undertones and a matte finish. It was incredibly powdery and dry, which yielded sheerer, uneven color coverage and made it difficult to blend as it got all over the place. It lasted for six hours before it had faded noticeably. NARS Fashion Rebel #2 (LE, $24.00) is warmer (95% similar). Bobbi Brown Ultra Violet (LE, $21.00) is lighter, warmer (90% similar). Inglot #386 (P, $6.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.
BUXOM Feather Boa Eyeshadow ($12.00 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “matte pastel pink.” It’s a light-medium, yellow-toned pink with a matte finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, silky consistency that ran a little powdery but applied well to bare skin and only sheered out slightly when blended. The color lasted for seven and a half hours on me. MAC The Wrong Man (LE, $16.00) is lighter (95% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Lover #4 (LE) is lighter (95% similar). FORMULA SUMMARY | BUXOM Eyeshadow ($12.00 each or $40 for six) is a new formula that is available as a customizable palette system, where you can purchase a single shade and an individual compact for $13 or purchase a six-pan palette, plus six eyeshadows to go inside of it, for $40. Each eyeshadow is held inside a metal pan that is (presumably) glued into a plastic pan that snaps into the compact/palette. The eyeshadows are easily lifted in and out of the palette, so you can rearrange them or create a new combination if you have more than one set of six. They will fit into a Z-palette, but you’ll need to add a magnet to keep it in place. The eyeshadow formula is one that works better in action than swatched, as several of the mattes seemed on the thinner, more powdery side, but then they would blend exceptionally well while adhering to bare skin–and they wouldn’t fade any faster than the more shimmery eyeshadows. The more shimmery shades tended to outperform the matte shades with better color payoff. These eyeshadows seem to have a slightly firmer press to them (more in the style of your average MAC eyeshadow), and they feel quite different compared to bareMinerals’ Ready line, as those have a thicker, denser consistency.
